Last month, we celebrated Austin’s first birthday party in true Altes fashion! He’s obsessed with Cowboys and Indians, so when it came time to choose a theme, it was a no-brainer. All three of us got dolled up in our finest Cowboy/Indian – inspired gear, and we asked guests to do the same! My friend’s a photographer, and she captured each and every moment so we could all enjoy each other’s company.
As far as décor, I opted for playful details like teepees, hay for seating (inexpensive and easy!), dream catchers, and of course, fake fire. My backyard looked so cute – Austin didn’t want to see it all get packed away – haha.
My favorite detail of all, though, was the ah-dorbable chalkboard filled with all of his milestones on the drink table. It highlighted all of the things he loves: Mumford and Sons, avocados, blueberries, his favorite books, his first words, and the nicknames Mark and I have for him. It was a great conversation piece, and our guests really loved this personalized touch.
We had such a blast – I can’t wait to see what’s in store for his second birthday!

First of all, I want to say thank you so much for having a blog! I googled, “themes for Austin’s first birthday” because I am clueless and I only have 2 weeks left to plan it! 11.8 MILLION results and yours was in the top 10!!!
I absolutely love the chalkboard milestone display. My handwriting wont compete; thank goodness for friends! I also just picked up a rustic, wood “A” from Michael’s that I can now put to use!!!
Thanks for the ideas,
