I got so many comments and questions about the gorgeous cake I had at my recent Holiday Soiree. And while I can’t take total credit for the cake, I can let you in on one of my go-to tricks when it comes to creating a pretty dessert: buying a $19-$29 cake from Whole Foods and dressing it up with creative toppings to make it my own.

For this particular event, I bought a simple white cake, placed it on a cute cake stand  (that’s a must!), cut up some fresh figs, piled them on top and that’s it!

If you need some inspo for topping ideas, I love using cranberries, raspberries, blueberries, roses, peonies, leaves, and a variety of greens. Honestly you can use whatever you’d like – the possibilities are endless as long as the toppings aren’t too heavy!

Shop my absolute favorite cake plates below, which are great holiday gifts, too!
