I know this may seem biased since I actually live here, but I think wine tasting in Sonoma County is superior to anywhere else. The region truly has some of the most breathtaking landscapes and is filled with some of the best wineries and vineyards.
As a proud resident, I’ve developed a huge passion for all things wine. Living so close to some of the best wineries in Sonoma County has allowed me to develop a deep-rooted appreciation for not only the wine itself, but for the full experience that comes along with it. Some of you may know that my love for wine runs so deep that I even have my own wine club, where you’ll feel like I have just hand-delivered some of my favorite varieties straight to your doorstep.
Wine tasting quickly became a favorite activity for me and is one that I especially love to share with family and friends. There’s something so magical about hanging out around a tasting room table sipping on delicious wines with some of your favorite people. I know it may sound silly but wine is consistently at the center of a lot of things I do! As a hostess at heart, I live for creating memorable experiences complete with delicious food and, of course, a chilled bottle of Chardonnay–my personal favorite.
I’ve put together a list of some of the best Sonoma wineries that you should definitely add to your list if you’re planning a trip. And if you are in fact planning a trip, can I join you?! But really, each winery on the list is guaranteed to offer exceptional wines, stunning scenery, and unforgettable experiences.
Any of these spots would be great for a girls trip (like we need another excuse to plan a good wine-tasting outfit), a romantic weekend away, or just a little relaxing getaway with loved ones. There’s also a handful included that are family-friendly wineries, so you can even bring the kids and know that they will have a good time too!
Best Wineries in Sonoma County
VJB Cellars
Situated in the picturesque Kenwood Valley, VJB Cellars offers an authentic Italian ambiance and an ideal setting for a delightful lunch experience. Indulge in wood-fired pizzas, panini sandwiches, crisp salads, and a tempting array of gelato flavors, complemented by their exceptional wine selection. Whether you’re in a small intimate group or a larger gathering, VJB Cellars provides a multitude of tasting options for every palate.
Benziger
Benziger Family Winery is a charming, family-owned biodynamic winery nestled in Glen Ellen. Visitors are offered tastings and guided tours of their Sonoma Mountain Estate, including an enchanting exploration of their wine cave. With an award-winning collection, Benziger Family Winery promises an unforgettable wine experience and is surely one of the most beautiful wineries in Sonoma.
Imagery Winery
Imagery Winery, another gem in Glen Ellen, exudes warmth and family charm. With amenities like a bocce ball court and big grassy areas, this is a wonderful spot if your kids are tagging along. They also offer picnic packages, which is a huge win in my book because who really wants to plan out a full meal to tote along?! Plus, their wines are incredible and their winemaker won the title of Best Woman Winemaker in the 2019 International Women’s Wine Competition.
Kendall Jackson Winery and Estate
Make sure to visit Kendall Jackson Winery and Estate during your Sonoma County trip! Their exceptional wines alone make it a must-stop destination, but don’t miss out on their exquisite food and wine pairings. The estate itself is breathtaking, featuring meticulously manicured gardens that supply a lot of the fresh produce used in their culinary creations.
La Crema
For those seeking a gorgeous setting with picnic tables and scenic views, La Crema Estate is another must-visit. Whether you bring your own picnic or indulge in their selection of crackers, cheeses, and meats, you’re in for a great experience. And with their exceptional wines, you’ll be sure to leave with a bottle or two in hand!
TIP: Uber and Lyft availability can be pretty inconsistent in the area. For reliable transportation to and from each winery (and to be sure you can drink as much wine as you please!), I suggest using Pure Luxury Limousine. They provide seriously excellent service, are incredibly accommodating, friendly, and dependable.
Copain
The setting at Copain is absolutely stunning–it’s perched on a hillside overlooking the Russian River Valley with breathtaking views that earn a 10/10 rating in my opinion. Copain specializes in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, so you can’t really go wrong here! I highly recommend arranging for their food and wine pairing experience for an extra touch of luxury.
Small Vines Winery
Located on Barlow Lane, Small Vines Winery welcomes both dogs and kids, offering a family-friendly atmosphere a little off the beaten path and away from the crowds. The name may hint at it, but I think this is one of the best small wineries in Sonoma. Pro tip: Appointments are required at this intimate boutique and family-owned winery so be sure to book in advance!
MacRostie Winery
Situated on a beautiful 14-acre Pinot Noir vineyard, the MacRostie Estate House serves as both a tasting room and winery. Before you can even step through the door, guests are warmly welcomed with a glass of wine. The views here are absolutely breathtaking and everyone gets a seat to enjoy the experience. Definitely don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in their amazing food and wine pairing.
Reeve Wines
Another stop at the top of my Sonoma wineries list is Reeve. At Reeve Winery, you’ll be treated to stunning views, exceptional wines, and a charming vintage atmosphere. A tasting experience at Reeve is all about taking it slow and enjoying a relaxed afternoon in a laid-back setting.
Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves
Bella Winery is a quaint, off the beaten path, family-operated winery focused on crafting small batches of zinfandel. I would suggest you pack a picnic basket and a blanket when you visit here for the best time. You can also enjoy wine tastings in their charming wine cave. Bella offers a truly unique and enjoyable experience!
Have you ever been to Preston winery? Love it there and their wine is so good I’ve been to Imagery, and I totally love their wine too.
I haven’t yet! Heard good things though so I will add it to my list!
