Given where we live (in the heart of wine country) as well as my undeniable obsession with a good glass of chardonnay, it’s fair to say that we spend a lot of time wine tasting. And true be told, there aren’t many ways I’d rather spend a day than at a local vineyard with my family and friends.
Wine tasting is the perfect activity whether you’re looking for something to do with your girlfriends or you want to plan a romantic date with your husband. Every vineyard has something unique to offer and it really is a unique way to spend time with the people you love.
Planning your experience should be relatively simple, but figuring out what to wear while wine tasting is a whole other ballgame. There are definitely some pieces you should avoid wearing to a vineyard, like crop tops and ripped jeans, for example. Even though these things are trendy and cute they aren’t necessarily appropriate.
One quick piece of advice: think of getting dressed for wine tasting almost as if you’re getting dressed to go to church with your parents. I know that might sound funny but if you keep etiquette in mind, you’ll be good!
Here, I’m sharing a handful of wine tasting outfit ideas for you to consider. These looks work for all seasons, whether your trip is in the fall, winter, summer or spring.
What to Wear Wine Tasting
Outfit #1: A Maxi Dress + Sandals or Heels
I loveeee a good maxi dress. They are so easy to slip on yet make you look and feel so put together. They also happen to make the perfect base layer for a wine tasting outfit.
Beyond spending time at a vineyard, you’re sure to get a lot of wear out of a maxi dress. You can even add layers, like a denim jacket or knit cardigan, depending on the weather/season.
As far as shoes go, sandals will likely be your best bet if you’re planning on walking around the vineyard a lot. I personally have worn heels while wine tasting and think that it’s totally doable as long as you’re not going to be on your feet a lot (and comfortable heels are key!)

Planning Tip: Fall is prime wine tasting season because that’s when everything is being harvested. The vineyards will be beautiful but you’ll pay more for tastings and hotels. On the other hand, winter is the most affordable time to go wine tasting (in January specifically) but the vineyards will look bare. And if you’re looking for an in between? Spring and early summer are great because the crowds will be down but things will be starting to grow more and more lush.
Outfit #2: A Dress + Boots
Another fool-proof wine tasting outfit idea? A short dress (I’m obsessed with this denim find) and a pair of boots. This is a great option if you’re dealing with transitional weather, like in the fall or spring.
Knee-high boots are practical because they can offer your legs some extra warmth, but if temperature isn’t an issue, a short pair of booties would work just as well!

Outfit #3: A Matching Set
Ideal for spring or summer wine tasting excursions, wearing a matching set is a simple way to look elevated. Plus, I don’t know about you, but I don’t always want to wear a dress or a pair of jeans, and a cute little set offers a way to switch things up.
You could easily pair this knit sweater set with over-the-knee boots on a colder day or this strapless set with a pair of heels when the sun is out.
Also, don’t forget to add some accessories! A wide-brimmed hat, a cute handbag, or even a fun pair of sunglasses can go a long way (and they’ll make your outfit look more “styled.”)

Outfit #4: A Tank + Shorts + a Cardigan
If you’re in the mood to wear shorts, I would highly recommend reaching for a pair that are linen or khaki (even these quilted shorts would be cute.) Honestly, these options just have a more polished feel when compared to jean shorts.
I’d style the shorts of your choice with a simple tank or even a nice white t-shirt. Then I’d throw a cardigan or denim jacket on top for an added layer.
For shoes, I am a big fan of Birkenstocks and think they’d be the ideal finishing touch. While this outfit is definitely on the more casual side, I think it would work if you want to be cozy yet still look cute!

Outfit #5: A Sweater or a Bodysuit + Jeans
Last but certainly not least, you can never go wrong with a simple pair of jeans and a sweater or bodysuit. Like I mentioned above, you’ll just want to be sure your jeans aren’t ripped at all (not the most appropriate look for wine tasting.)
This is my go-to wine tasting outfit during the cooler months. It’s also a good choice if you’re really stumped on what to wear since you can easily put it together with pieces you already have in your closet.
I’m totally eyeing this wrap sweater and long-sleeve bodysuit—both would look adorable with jeans and these heels!
