Whether you’re an OG blog reader or you recently followed me on Instagram, you likely know that I am adamant about making my bed every day. This little ritual sets me up for success (getting one small task done first thing in the morning just gets the momentum going!) Plus, there’s nothing more cozy and welcoming than a freshly made bed.
Around dusk, I also like to do a little “turn down” service in our bedroom, similar to what they do at fancy hotels. Either Mark or I will pull the duvet down and turn on our bedside lamps. Then, after dinner and some family time, we have an inviting room to retreat to.
These habits might seem small, but they have the power to set the tone and help with transitions. On top of it all, there’s something to be said about quality bedding (and the way you make said bedding.) After years of searching for bedding that’s worth investing in, I’ve officially nailed how to make my bed feel like a hotel bed. Crisp sheets, fluffy pillows, and a plush duvet are the staples, but I’m sharing all of my tips and tricks for creating your own personal slice of heaven below.
How I Make My Bed Feel Like a Hotel Bed
Down Comforter
Aside from your mattress, choosing the right comforter for your bed will ultimately make or break your sleeping experience. One trick I learned from Pottery Barn is to place two down comforters into one duvet to make it super fluffy. It’s a hack they use when putting together their bedding floor displays — and it’s why those beds always look so appealing to crawl into!
This is the exact down comforter we use on our bed. It has held its shape so well and I love that it comes in multiple weights/thickness options to accommodate different types of sleepers.
Signature Sheets
Another key to making your bed feel like one you would slip into at a luxurious five-star resort? Good sheets. We’ve had the signature sheets from Boll & Branch on our bed for years now and I cannot say enough good things about them. They wash well and maintain their quality.
Basic white sheets are my go-to but this set comes in a ton of colors if you’re looking for something that stands out more.
Tip: After you wash your sheets, throw them in the dryer and pull them out before they’re completely dry. Let them air dry the rest of the way and then put them on your bed. This gives them a more crisp feel!
Flannel Sheets
Don’t underestimate the power of swapping out your sheets based on the season. While spring and summer months might call for lighter weight options, flannel sheets are a must during the fall and winter — this is especially true if you have a vacation home in the mountains! There’s something about flannel sheets that instantly feel so inviting and nostalgic. This set is a fave of ours…
Holiday Bedding
Speaking of wintertime, one small yet impactful upgrade you can make to your bedroom during this season is to swap out your bedding.
I’m a big fan of the finds from Boll & Branch because they offer lots of “winter” looking options that don’t necessarily feel Christmas-y. This will allow whatever you choose to serve your space for several months rather than just through December. For example, neutral plaid prints are more acceptable to keep out until the spring as opposed to Christmas tree prints.
Waffle Blanket
Another one of my top bed making tips is to place a sheet and a waffle blanket between you and your duvet. This is how many hotels make the beds in their guest rooms and something about it just feels extra luxe. Plus, if you run too hot you can throw the duvet off and you’ll still have a blanket to keep cozy with.
Hotel Collection Pillows
When trying to achieve your own hotel-like bed, don’t skimp out on the pillow front. I don’t know about you but I’ve always been a fan of the fluffy and full pillows at nice hotels. You can get really good inserts that have a similar feel from Amazon (of all places!) These are perfect for sleeping with or for inserting into decorative shams.
Cotton Percale Sheets
If you’re hoping to stick to a tighter budget, I think the bedding selection at Target is actually a great dupe for more expensive brands. This cotton sheet set has a light and neutral print that would pair well with a variety of duvets and blankets.
Duvet and Sham Set
Last but not least, this pinstripe comforter and sham set recently caught my eye. It would blend well with our current bedroom decor and I like that it’s under $100. This would also be a good option for a guest bedroom or even for kids.
