Denim shorts are a timeless staple in every wardrobe and you more than likely already have a pair or two that you can use as a perfect starting point for some cute summer outfits. With so many different washes and styles available, denim shorts are incredibly versatile and can be used to create a wide range of looks.

Whether you’re aiming for a laid-back, casual look styled with Birkenstocks and a baseball cap or something a bit more polished for a date night out, denim shorts can and should be a go-to piece. I’ve put together some of my favorite ideas for how to style denim shorts in the hopes that it gives you some inspiration to try out a handful of different looks for any occasion this season.

How to Style Denim Shorts

Denim Shorts with Birkenstocks

Most of you probably have noticed by now that I am crushing way too hard on this light yellow color. Needless to say, this summer knit beach sweater is a must-have (it comes in so many good colors) and would be so cute paired with these light wash denim shorts.

Throw on your favorite pair of Birkenstocks for the ultimate comfy weekend outfit while still looking put together. Then lastly, grab a pair of white sunnies and a summery tote for an effortlessly cool girl ensemble you’ll be reaching for time and time again.

Denim Shorts with a Jean Jacket

You can simply never go wrong with a white denim and jean jacket combo, but this look is even better styled with the rich tones of this woven leather belt and these flat canvas sandals. Add a little bit of pattern with this striped strapless top and you’ve got yourself the perfect outfit for a day out this summer. This one would be perfect for a weekend brunch, a farmers market stroll, or a happy hour after work.

Denim Shorts with Cowboy Boots

There’s something about cowboy boots and denim shorts that just works every single time. These faded black denim shorts are the ideal cut to be styled with a good pair of boots—and how cute would these suede mid-calf cowboy boots look?

To really lean into the whole western vibe with this one, I love this dark straw hat and this ruffled eyelet top. This leather shoulder bag also ties back perfectly to the cowboy boots and these aviator style sunglasses complete the whole vibe. While I’d definitely wear this outfit to a country music concert, it really goes for any outing or occasion.

Denim Shorts with a Blazer

Who says denim shorts can’t be dressed up?! I’m loving this look for some good inspiration on how to dress up denim shorts. Pairing these darker washed tailored denim shorts with a silky lace camisole layered under a simple black blazer keeps the look classy and polished. Adding a pop of metallic with some silver slingback pumps and a pair of fun and chunky earrings creates some unexpected character and personality. Grab your favorite black leather clutch and you’ll be ready to go!

This would be such a cute outfit for your next date night or even for a girls night out. The best part about this look is that all of the pieces I incorporated are versatile and could be styled so many different ways–we love some good closet staples around here!

Denim Shorts with Sneakers

For a more casual look, pairing mom style denim shorts with sneakers and a baseball cap is always a failsafe in my book. I love this light pink custom initial baseball hat paired with this fun blue and white striped tote bag to carry around all your essentials (I’ll definitely be using this as a wine tote for summer picnics). Finish off the look with these neutral sneakers and a classic white button down for an outfit you’re guaranteed to be repeating through the summer and beyond.
