I feel like everyone has been in Europe this summer and it’s making me so pumped up for our upcoming trip to Italy! Mark and I are taking the kids in September and I truly cannot wait. This has been a bucket list vacation for quite some time and I can’t believe it’s all becoming a reality. I can’t wait to explore the little towns, eat amazing food, and kick back by the beach.
Whether you’ve been to Italy before or you’re planning a first-time trip, packing for an international getaway is undoubtedly challenging. Oh, and did I mention that we’re only bringing carry-on bags with us? (This is the one I’m bringing as well as this very roomy backpack!) This probably goes without saying but I have been struggling to figure out how I’m going to squeeze all my stuff into a small little suitcase — but honestly, potentially losing my luggage sounds much worse.
I have found so much inspo on what to wear in Italy in the summer and have loved shopping for pieces to pack specifically for this trip (sorry Mark!) However, I wanted to make sure that everything I’m packing is practical and will actually get worn. After all, I don’t want to take up precious luggage space with something that’s not going to be used.
To help you plan your outfits for your own trip, I’m sharing exactly what I’m packing and what I’ve bought and loved. I’m bringing all of these pieces on our vacation and can’t wait to style them once we get there!
p.s. You can find a quick list of what to pack at the end of this post!
What to Wear in Italy in the Summer
Maxi Dresses With Sandals
Since our trip isn’t until mid-September, the weather can range quite a bit more than it does during peak summer. It can get hot during the day and cool off at night, and if there’s one piece that can conform to a wide range of temperatures, it’s a maxi dress.
I have always been a maxi dress girl because they’re so cute, they’re easy to throw on, and they suit a variety of occasions. Another perk to maxi dresses (especially when it comes to traveling) is that they’re just one piece, taking the guess work out of getting ready.
The black and white outfit I’m wearing in the photo below is actually a maxi skirt set, which is another option you could reach for if you want to switch things up. The exact outfit is under $46 and it’s from Amazon!
Another standout is this $22 dress (seen above), which I was worried would look cheap yet was pleasantly surprised by. I mean, there’s no better print that gives off Italy vibes. I also love this classic silk dress, which would be easy to dress up or down depending on the occasion.
Mini Dresses With Sneakers or Sandals
Similar to the outfit idea above, I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a simple mini dress. Pair any style with sandals or sneakers for a practical yet cute look.
One tip to keep in mind when choosing sandals is to pack a pair that are completely flat. It’s likely you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking, and the last thing you want is to be dealing with uncomfortable shoes. Wear white sneakers on the days that you plan to be on your feet the most.
All of these dresses could be worn to stroll around town, grab lunch, or to get dinner. They’re versatile and are sure to be reached for long after you return from your trip!
Denim Shorts and a Bodysuit or Tank Top
It doesn’t get much more classic than a pair of denim shorts and a tank top — regardless of where you’re traveling. In my opinion, denim shorts are a must-pack item because they go with so many different pieces and can offer you multiple wears during your trip. I also love that they keep you cool on the bottom but you can easily add layers on top with a sweater, jacket, etc.
Dress the look up a bit by tying a sweater around your shoulders — something about it just feels European. Stripes can add a fun touch to an otherwise simple look, so consider opting for a tank or layer with a pattern on it. Oh, and you can also opt for a bodysuit if that’s more comfortable!
Linen Shorts and a Tank Top
If the thought of wearing denim shorts in warmer temperatures doesn’t sound appealing to you, swap them for a pair of linen or cotton shorts. They offer the same look and are just as (if not more) cozy to wear all day.
I’m planning to wear the outfit below to lunch, while walking around, or as a cover-up to the beach. I felt like the yellow and white stripes were perfect for Italy, and when paired with a solid tank, they really pop!
Also, don’t go on your trip without bringing a pair of Birkenstocks. I have a slight obsession with this pair as well as this double buckle pair because they are the easiest and most supportive shoes you can slip on — ideal for a vacation that requires a lot of walking.
Swimsuits and Beach Accessories
I know this goes without saying, but swimwear and cover-ups are essential if you plan on visiting any beaches during your trip. Use this opportunity to treat yourself to some high quality (and super fu*king cute) beach looks.
This has been my favorite category to shop for ahead of our vacation because there are so many girly and fun pieces out there. I love anything with a little bow detail (or floral embellishments like on my bikini below!) Complete your waterside look with some sandals, a straw beach bag, and a cozy cover-up — I’m obsessed with this matching set.
Romper and an Oversized Button-Up Shirt
If comfort is the top priority for you while you’re traveling, this outfit will be your new go-to. Honestly, this could even be worn during your flight if you don’t mind wearing one piece.
I love the athletic/sporty look of the romper I’m wearing below. It’s casual while still leaving you put-together. For an additional layer (and to style things a bit more) add an oversized button up on top. While lightweight, this piece can provide you with just the right amount of warmth when the sun starts to go down.
Dressy Romper and Sandals
Looking for something to wear to a nice dinner? For a dressier take on the romper idea, opt for something more elevated, like this one pick (which I’m wearing below) or this striped one. Accessorize and add some color with a fun handbag or some dangly earrings. I’ve come across the cutest accessories from Revolve and I’m linking them below!
