The Best Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe

homemade tortilla recipe

Tortillas were never on my must-make list, but after giving it a try (and nailing it), I couldn’t be more obsessed with this recipe. You might think that a tortilla is a tortilla, but trust me, they are soooo much better when they’re homemade. Plus, they don’t require a lot of ingredients.

After you’ve made these, butter one up and sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar—this makes the most heavenly combo! Oh, and they last in the fridge for up to a week.

p.s. If you don’t already have a tortilla press on hand, this is the one I use and love.

Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In Kitchen Aid with the flour hook attached, add the flour and salt. Turn the mixer on medium and then add the butter and water slowly. Let this mix until it forms a ball. Note: if the dough is super sticky you can add a little more flour.
  2. Once it’s in a ball, put a damp dishcloth over the bowl and let the dough sit for 30 minutes.
  3. After 30 minutes, place the dough on a floured space and knead it for about 1 min until it forms a ball shape.
  4. Next, make about 12-15 balls out of the dough (depending on how big you want your tortillas to be.) Set the dough balls aside and place the damp towel over them for another 10 minutes.
  5. Take a dough ball and smash it in your tortilla press. Then transfer that pressed dough to the floured surface and roll out very thin with a rolling pin.
  6. Heat a flat griddle or cast iron pan until hot and then add the tortilla to the pan. Let it fluff up and get brown spots and then turn and do the same to the other side.
  7. Remove and you’ve got yourself some homemade flour tortillas!
